One landscape, several written traditions: the same settlement under its current, historical and Aromanian names, with stable identifiers.

One landscape, several written traditions

Historical Manakia captions, Ottoman records, Romanian ethnographic albums, Greek administrative maps, Albanian place names and present-day Macedonian or Bulgarian databases often refer to the same settlement under different names. A gazetteer should connect them without flattening their history. Aromanian forms, in particular, are not mistakes to be “corrected” into a modern official spelling.

The entries below are settlement-level identifiers, where available. Wikidata offers a stable concept identifier; GeoNames offers a geographical identifier and alternate-name index. Neither proves the date, historical spelling or linguistic origin of a name. A modern georeference also cannot by itself locate the historical camera station: that requires the image analysis described above.

Manakia objects recorded for some of these places (examples from the inventories): Vovousa, Bitola GPN 5017 and MNȚR Mk-123; Laista, Bitola GPN 1115 and MNȚR Mk-1919; Metsovo, Bitola GPN 0741 and MNȚR Mk-1934; Krania, Bitola GPN 0742 and MNȚR Mk-1903.

How to use the language labels. el is Greek, rup is Aromanian, tr is Turkish, sq is Albanian, mk is Macedonian and bg is Bulgarian. The Aromanian column also records the project’s locally relevant historic usage; not every form has yet been traced to a dialectological dictionary. Blank spaces in a multilingual database should mean not attested or not yet checked, not “this community had no name for the place.” Transliteration into another script is not automatically evidence of local historical usage.

Two safeguards against false matches. Kruševo town (Q157034 / 788961) must not be confused with Kruševo Municipality (a different administrative feature and identifier). Perivoli, Grevena (Q2642890 / 255497) must not be confused with a second Perivoli in Phthiotis, which GeoNames records separately as 255499. Similarly, Metsovo town (Q985630 / 257083) is not the present-day municipality (which has its own entity and code), and Plovdiv city (Q459 / 728193) must be distinguished from surrounding administrative units. The same principle applies to Ioannina city, island and municipality.

Data source and checking notes

Identifiers were cross-checked in Wikidata, GeoNames, or a derived map resource displaying both, in October 2026. Representative records: Kruševo, Syrrako, Avdella, Vovousa, Laista, Kalarrites, Metsovo, Voskopojë, Korçë, Plovdiv, Sliven, Bitola, Ioannina.
